The Logic of Reason

Posted in Miscellaneous, Rants with tags , , , , on May 27, 2012 by C J Spear

It took me a while to think of a topic to write about this week – it happens from time to time. I said a while back that I was going to write an Avengers review, but I’m holding back on that until I’ve watched it a second time, and so this week I’ll just sort of be musing on a topic that I’ve had on my mind recently. Apologies if it’s a little philosophical, but if you’re a regular reader here you should be used to reading incoherent rants.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the concept of logic. Logic is what I base most of my decisions on, and largely defines how I live my life, and this is true for almost all of us whether we realize it or not. Every decision we make is based on what seems reasonable and logical to us – if something seems too illogical, we won’t do it, unless we decide that being illogical is what makes it worth it (see: hipsters).

Returning to WoW

Posted in Gaming with tags , , , , , on May 20, 2012 by C J Spear

So as most of you know I originally set this blog up as a WoW blog, as I enjoyed writing and talking about WoW. When I decided to leave, it was down to most of my in-game friends quitting and feeling like I didn’t really have anything left to do in WoW. I started this blog up again because I missed writing weekly posts like I had when I was playing, but I had no real intention of coming back to WoW to raid. It’s funny how things change.

WoW was (and still is) a fairly major time-sink. Even if you only raid two nights a week, the amount of stuff outside of raids means you spend a large amount of time in game. That isn’t necessarily bad in and of itself, assuming it isn’t taking away from time you should be spending on work or whatever. However, there’s a certain social stigma associated with playing MMO’s, and the sort of saving grace for it is if you play casually. Someone who spends 30-40 hours a week playing a game is an anti-social loser. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from the last year not playing WoW, it’s that this view couldn’t be further from the truth.

Swearing

Posted in Rants with tags , , , on May 13, 2012 by C J Spear

Apologies for there being no post last Sunday, but things got in the way and I didn’t get the chance to sit down and write. If I’m feeling particularly productive today, you may get two posts out of me, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Either way, my next post will probably be a review of The Avengers (in short, it was awesome) if I can get my thoughts on it down into something intelligible. First though, you have this rant about swearing, specifically in regards to people who write swear words down on social media or forums.

I try not to swear too often, mostly just because I think if you say a word too often it loses its meaning and edge, and with a swear word that makes it worthless. The point of swear words is to convey large amounts of emotion succinctly, and as such should only be used sparingly. That said, I won’t shy away from using swears when I feel them adequate, especially in my writing; they give an extra burst of interest that writing can often be lacking.
