What am I Missing?

I’ve mentioned on this blog before about how I’m trying to watch as many films as possible, but another thing I’m working on is reading more. I’ve always loved reading, but during my years at college and Uni I barely read anything other than stuff for my courses. When I left Uni, I made a concerted effort to change this, and started searching out lots of classic sci-fi and fantasy novels. It was my favourite genre, so it made sense to start there.

This went fairly well, as I’ve now read quite a few of the classics (Dune, Foundation, I am Legend, Rama, 2001 a Space Odyssey, I Robot, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, The Man in the High Castle, Lord of the Rings), even if I did basically take a year out to read everything that Asimov wrote because I fell in love with his stories. There’s still plenty left to explore in the genre, especially considering I haven’t read hardly any modern sci-fi, but I figured that it was time to branch out a bit and check out other things. After checking out a few mystery and crime novels, I figured it might be good to start reading the all time classics.

On Fandom and Geek Culture

The internet has always been a place where people can spout their opinions, regardless of whether or not they’re ill-informed. As the internet age developed, millions of people realised that they now had the ability to share their views with the guarantee that at least a few other people would hear them, with the possibility that hundreds or even thousands might see it. It’s easy to feel lost in a world with over 7 billion people all vying for attention, so it’s hardly surprising that so many people jumped at the chance to feel like their voice was being heard.

With the demand ever-increasing, technology has been built around allowing more and more of this, with social media creating a world where people can instantly share their views with others, or contact people who would otherwise be hopelessly out of reach. When the internet was first created, people optimistically thought that the world might get smarter; with all the information you could ever want at your fingertips, surely people would research things, increase their knowledge on a variety of topics or seek out people with opposing views that may challenge their beliefs. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happened.

Hurry Up, Future

Posted in Rants with tags , , , , , , , , on May 5, 2016 by C J Spear

Game of Thrones returned to TV a couple of weeks ago, which is generally a cause for celebration. However, being British, I’m always going to find something to complain about, and in this case while the show itself has been great and I’m enjoying it, I can’t help but feel irritated by the time between episodes. It’s not just the wait, but the problems that the wait entails.

Now, this post may just come off as a millennial whining about things that are unimportant, because things are much better than they used to be, and to a certain extent yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m old enough to remember life before the internet; when TV watching was a massive headache where you either sat down at the exact right time or just missed out. I understand that I have things better now than anyone 20 years ago could ever dreamed of.

However, I can’t help but feel that we’re stuck in an awkward limbo between the past and the future, where we have the technology and the means to streamline our entertainment, but a lot of companies haven’t caught up with it, or are just clinging to older models because they assume they’ll be more profitable or they just fear change. What am I talking about? Let me back track a little.

Is there a line you can’t cross in comedy?

I’ve been seeing a whole lot of articles and discussion about rape and rape culture as of late. While it’s an interesting topic, I’ve largely stayed away from writing about it, partly because it’s one of those topics that most people don’t want to read about, and partly because most of my thoughts on the matter have been expressed more eloquently elsewhere. The latter was especially true for the on-going discussion about rape culture in video-games, as my views were pretty set in stone and obvious. For those of you not aware, there has been a growing trend in gaming culture to use the word rape as an insult and to mock opponents, mostly in online FPS games. Not only has this led to the word becoming over-used, to the point where people use it without thinking about its true meaning, but it’s created a nasty hive of sexist behaviour in a culture that already struggles to represent women positively.

The Logic of Reason

Posted in Miscellaneous, Rants with tags , , , , on May 27, 2012 by C J Spear

It took me a while to think of a topic to write about this week – it happens from time to time. I said a while back that I was going to write an Avengers review, but I’m holding back on that until I’ve watched it a second time, and so this week I’ll just sort of be musing on a topic that I’ve had on my mind recently. Apologies if it’s a little philosophical, but if you’re a regular reader here you should be used to reading incoherent rants.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the concept of logic. Logic is what I base most of my decisions on, and largely defines how I live my life, and this is true for almost all of us whether we realize it or not. Every decision we make is based on what seems reasonable and logical to us – if something seems too illogical, we won’t do it, unless we decide that being illogical is what makes it worth it (see: hipsters).

Swearing

Posted in Rants with tags , , , on May 13, 2012 by C J Spear

Apologies for there being no post last Sunday, but things got in the way and I didn’t get the chance to sit down and write. If I’m feeling particularly productive today, you may get two posts out of me, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Either way, my next post will probably be a review of The Avengers (in short, it was awesome) if I can get my thoughts on it down into something intelligible. First though, you have this rant about swearing, specifically in regards to people who write swear words down on social media or forums.

I try not to swear too often, mostly just because I think if you say a word too often it loses its meaning and edge, and with a swear word that makes it worthless. The point of swear words is to convey large amounts of emotion succinctly, and as such should only be used sparingly. That said, I won’t shy away from using swears when I feel them adequate, especially in my writing; they give an extra burst of interest that writing can often be lacking.

The Concept of Power

Posted in Miscellaneous, Rants with tags , , , on April 29, 2012 by C J Spear

The concept of power has always fascinated me. While I usually understand the logic behind most things that drive people, power is always something that has eluded my understanding. I suppose I’m just one of those people that doesn’t seek power, and while that’s fine in and of itself, what’s problematic is the fact that I don’t really understand the logic behind why anyone else would want to be powerful.
