The internet has always been a place where people can spout their opinions, regardless of whether or not they’re ill-informed. As the internet age developed, millions of people realised that they now had the ability to share their views with the guarantee that at least a few other people would hear them, with the possibility that hundreds or even thousands might see it. It’s easy to feel lost in a world with over 7 billion people all vying for attention, so it’s hardly surprising that so many people jumped at the chance to feel like their voice was being heard.

With the demand ever-increasing, technology has been built around allowing more and more of this, with social media creating a world where people can instantly share their views with others, or contact people who would otherwise be hopelessly out of reach. When the internet was first created, people optimistically thought that the world might get smarter; with all the information you could ever want at your fingertips, surely people would research things, increase their knowledge on a variety of topics or seek out people with opposing views that may challenge their beliefs. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happened.

Warcraft: The Beginning – Review

Posted in Film, Gaming with tags , , , , , , on June 7, 2016 by C J Spear

It’s rare that two of my main interests – gaming and film – intersect. The history of video game adaptations to film isn’t a pretty one, and when the Warcraft film was announced as actually a thing that was happening, I was both nervous and excited. Warcraft has such potential for incredible films, but as with any video game adaptation, it had the chance to be terrible.

Before I dive into details, let me just start by saying the film isn’t terrible – it’s avoided the pitfalls of ‘another terrible video game movie’. Is it an incredible, groundbreaking, life-changing film? No, but that was always unlikely, and as far as I’m concerned the film was good enough. Good enough sounds like a fairly mediocre review, but I mean from the stand point of a general audience member. Warcraft provides a fun film experience for people who’ve never played the game, but for fans of the franchise (especially the lore) it’s something else entirely. The World of Warcraft has been brought to life.

My full review after the cut, but we warned that there will be some spoilers ahead. If you’re familiar with the lore it shouldn’t be anything surprising, but if you’re not then I’d recommended seeing it and coming back.

Batman V Superman V Frustration

Posted in Film with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 31, 2016 by C J Spear

I was going to avoid writing another blog post about a film, as I’ve done a few of those over the last couple months, but then Batman V Superman happened and I just needed to write stuff down about it. This post will be less a review of a film, and more of a deconstruction of everything it does wrong. This film was frustrating, because it could have been so much better than it was. Whether you liked it or not, hopefully we can all agree on that.

Obviously, I’ll be talking about the whole plot, so if you’re avoiding spoilers, stop reading now. You’ve been warned.

My Movie Quest

Posted in Film with tags , , , , , on February 1, 2016 by C J Spear

I’m on a quest, ladies and gentlemen. Not an interesting or heroic quest, like bringing about world peace or finding the Holy Grail (because strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government).

No, I’m on a quest to watch movies. Not every movie ever made, because that would be impossible and also a colossal waste of time. I want to watch every movie that matters.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Review (SPOILERS)

Posted in Film with tags , , , , on December 22, 2015 by C J Spear

I had a number of topics I was considering for this months blog post, and then I remembered Star Wars was coming out, and yeah this post was never gonna be about anything else. If you haven’t seen the film yet, and somehow haven’t already been spoiled, don’t read on until you’ve seen the film as I’ll be talking major spoilers. If you have seen the film, read on for my full review.

Avengers Review

Posted in Film with tags , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by C J Spear

I did something Tuesday that I’d never done before – I went to see a film at the cinema for a second time. There were a few reasons why I went to see Avengers again – one was that I wanted to see it twice before writing this review. Another was that I figured if I was going to go to the cinema, I’d like my money to go towards a film that deserves to make a lot of money. The main reason, though, is that Avengers Assemble is freaking awesome.

Avengers does right what almost every other summer blockbuster over the past 5 years or so does wrong. It creates a massive action spectacle, but bases it around characters with depth and story, and actually makes us care about what we’re seeing and what’s happening on screen. What makes this more impressive is the fact that it could have gone so wrong, with so many characters all shoved into one film. The bulk of the main characters are fit to hold their own films (and for the most part, had their own films), and so squeezing all of them into one film and not making it feel messy or rushed was quite a feat, but one that was achieved seemlessly.

Why I Hate 3D

Posted in Film, Rants with tags , on April 8, 2012 by C J Spear

Before starting todays topic, apologies are due for not bringing a post out in a few days. However, deep down I knew I wouldn’t be able to manage a post every day. I just wanted to try it for a little while because I wanted to force myself into some work. Problem is that on days where I’m doing other work I just don’t have the time to write a post, and there simply isn’t enough topics that I could cover to make a daily post manageable. Instead, I’m going to try and find a topic that I can write a post on once a week, probably every sunday, so that I’m still writing to a deadline and can still get in lots of writing practise, but without it being an impossible task.

With that out of the way, lets get on to a topic that I can’t believe I haven’t ranted over before – 3D. Specifically in movies and TV – I haven’t got any radical ideas about life in two dimensions. The short version of my opinion is that 3D is beyond irritating, and pointless. You can find out why by reading on, or you can leave now and save yourself an, albeit eloquent, wall of text. I don’t mind either way – I’m gonna rant about it regardless.
